Nominations and Applications

Almighty and everliving God, source of all wisdom and understanding, be present with those who take counsel for the renewal and mission of your Church.  Teach us in all things to seek first your honor and glory.  Guide us to perceive what is right, and grant us both the courage to pursue it and the grace to accomplish it; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Springfield announces a search for the XII Bishop of the Diocese. All Bishops and Priests of  the Anglican Communion of those duly constituted Diocese, Provinces, and regional Churches in communion with the See of Canterbury are eligible for nomination. The process for nomination and application are included in this document.  For those interested, the Profile of the diocese may be read here.

Election of 12th Bishop of the Springfield Diocese

First, please take note that the election process in the Diocese of Springfield is uniquely transparent. There is no search committee that assembles a slate; instead, all nominees who complete the nomination process will have their relevant application materials made public to the people of the Diocese on September 14. A Nominating Synod, in conjunction with our Annual Synod on October 15th and 16th, will narrow that field to three candidates. Between October 25th and November 20th, we anticipate having opportunities for us to “Meet the Candidates” during visits to locations around the Diocese. Finally, there will be an Electing Synod on December 11th leading to a consecration of the XIIth Bishop of Springfield on May 21, 2022, pending final checks and consents.

We seek qualified nominations and encourage all to pray and think about those who might be called to be our next bishop. All bishops and priests of the Anglican Communion, those duly constituted Dioceses, Provinces, and regional Churches in communion with the See of Canterbury, are eligible for nomination. Please read the Profile carefully before making a nomination

Nominations of canonically qualified priests or bishops may be submitted by any baptized member of an Episcopal church.  A nomination from one lay person and one cleric is required to begin the process; self-nomination is not acceptable. However, nominees must also submit an application after having been nominated.

The Diocese of Springfield is working actively during this search with the Episcopal Church’s Office of Pastoral Development, who are beginning to use our 2-stage process with no separate search committee as a model for smaller dioceses. If you would like to know more about this collaboration, our search consultant Fr. Ron Clingenpeel has written about it here.
