Standing in the Kansas wind under the huge open sky, my face was wet with tears. I was beside my husband’s grave. I heard the Voice that you know that you know….and He said to me, “Why are you crying over the dead when there are so many dying without me?” The Lord was calling me back into missions.
The Lord was giving me a future. He was calling me back into active service in His Name. I was excited and a little scared, but my heart was soaring. He never shelves His servants because of things like age or disability. He always has a plan for us. Jeremiah 29:11 says,
plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
My husband and I had been missionaries to Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands for ten years. We returned home in 1999 expecting to go to Japan as a new assignment. However, Charles was diagnosed with returning cancer. So we retired from missions because he was no longer able to carry on the work so close to his heart. He died in 2012, just days before our 61st wedding anniversary.
I called my mission sending agency, Global Teams, and they reinstated me and have walked alongside of me as I have navigated appropriate placement and additional training.
I am going to Southeast Asia. I visited there in January, 2014 to meet the GT team and explore their ministry to young men and women. It seems like a good fit. My age is a benefit as they pay great respect to the older people and value their experience and wisdom.
I knew little about that area so I began investigating. There is one story I found important to me and interesting to pass on to you. This is a true story, thousands of years old.
A king’s young son was lavished with everything he wanted except to go beyond the palace walls. Every evil and terrible thing was kept from him. One day he asked his father permission to go out into the world and see things for himself. The king reluctantly agreed and they boy set out with a guardian to protect him.
Along the way the boy saw an old man. He asked his guardian what was the matter with that man?
The guardian said that the man was old and that all men will grow old, even he. Then they saw a sick person and they boy asked what was the matter with that person. The guardian answered that the man was sick and that all people get sick and die, even he. The boy was very disturbed by this and wanted to find a way to prevent all the suffering he had seen. Sometime later he asked his father if he could go back into the world outside his gate and try to find the answer. The king let him go, and the boy became a wandering monk. He spent his time meditating and searching for the way to end suffering and endless rebirth.
After many years of wandering he decided that the only way to stop this cycle of weariness was oblivion. In due time he became “enlightened” and wrote the “8 Fold Path” to lead his followers in the way. He had no concept of a god or of sin.
Every day millions of people come to statues of him to ask for favor. They ask a man, a dead man, who is called the Buddha.
I have been called to join a multinational team mentoring and teaching a group of young men and women who are learning and growing together in a safe and nurturing community. Their common bond is their love of the Lord Jesus Christ. Their desire is to learn more about Him and take this love and knowledge and share it with their own people as field partners with Global Teams. They are committed.
My part will be to teach English (a requirement for better employment) and to start a women’s group that will be part of the community. Read: Housemother. I will be working with both young men and women on language and also witnessing to them what it means to be a Christian in today’s world. My heart is set. My instructions are clear. I am content.
The Great Commission in Matthew 28:19 tells us:
baptizing them in the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit….
Obedience to this command rewards everyone who participates. Imagine watching these young people grow and learn, spreading out across the country taking the Word of God with them. Be in prayer for them as they face inevitable dangers from dissenters. Rejoice with them when they witness the light of understanding and acceptance that shines from the eyes of those who are learning about Jesus for the first time. Our world is in a gigantic upheaval. The One who brings peace is needed now more than ever. Please consider if the Lord is calling you to partner with me in prayer and finances.
Today, I am asking you to join in this effort to take the Gospel into another part of the world. The Lord is asking for both those who go and those who send to answer His command. Our coming together as partners will help to see that Jesus Christ is preached in ALL the world.
