Friday (Martin Luther King)

Some months ago, the Bishop of Mississippi asked me to share with him the oversight of his parish in the community of Yazoo City, Trinity Church, under the terms of a protocol established by the House of Bishops called Delegated Episcopal Pastoral Oversight (DEPO). If all the parties are agreeable, DEPO is invoked when a parish feels itself so sharply at odds theologically with its proper bishop that it believes it can only get the appropriate pastoral oversight and care elsewhere. So this weekend is my initial visit to Yazoo City. Brenda and I left home at noon, caught a 4:30ish flight in St Louis, changed planes (rather quickly) in Atlanta, arrived in Jackson around 7:15, were picked up by Trinity rector Fr George Woodliff, treated to a wonderful meal at a catfish restaurant, and driven the hour or so to Yazoo City, on the edge of the Mississippi Delta. Settling in now at the Hampton Inn and looking forward to the weekend.
