The Armed Forces Commission

The Armed Forces Commission exists to raise awareness of ministry needs of Episcopal veterans and current service members. There are an extraordinary number of veterans in our congregations, many whose lives have been significantly shaped and changed by their military experience. There are also significant numbers of Active Duty and Reserve personnel from our parishes.

The primary vehicle of ministry in the service is through military chaplains. Chaplains are clergy from various denominations trained to do ministry in the unique environment, of the Armed Forces.

There are a variety of ways parishes can be a part of ministry to the military. For example, Episcopal Armed Forces Prayer Books and Service Crosses are available at the Diocesan Center, and may be presented during worship for those who have joined the service and are leaving for basic training. Like any life-changing experience, young people should begin that endeavor with a sense of their congregation's support and encouragement. That support should continue even after the individual has left. At a minimum this includes praying for them.

Clergy are invited to consider whether they are called to ministry in the Armed Forces, while parishes are called to be opened to the need for ministry to veterans and service members in their midst.

The Chair of the Armed Forces Commission is The Reverend Mark Winward: markwinward@mac.com
