The Department of Christian Social Concerns

Chemical Dependency

The Chemical Dependency Commission seeks to explore, provide leadership and assistance and to develop programs to meet the needs of persons who are seeking help with alcohol and other drug dependencies. The Commission is assisted through the identification of persons in recovery in the churches and the community in the Diocese who are willing to be resource persons. Due to the geographically widespread diocese, such resource persons assist in the Commission’s ability to respond better to those in need of substance abuse information, education and treatment.

The Chair of the Commission is The Reverend Howard B. Bowlin: hbbowlin@earthlink.net

Economic Justice and JUBILEE Ministry

The Commission Economic Justice and JUBILEE Ministry was set up through the economic justice portion of the National Episcopal Church. It seeks to help communities in need, to develop entrepreneurial training programs, corporate housing, community development credit unions of which minorities are unable to access. This ministry is shared by the Episcopal Diocese of Springfield (through this Commission), the United Church of Christ and the Presbyterian Churches in the local area. The Commission shares a certain amount of commonality with Project H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Emerge) and thus focuses much of its energy in the Metro East St. Louis area, working together with Project H.O.P.E.

The Jubilee Ministry recognizes social ministry in the Episcopal Church and is involved in several hundred projects in the Episcopal Church which are approved by the Executive Council. The work is published and resources are shared with others.

The Chair of the Commission is Mr. Winn Pardee: wpardee@mindspring.com
